Betrayed by Brown Mackie

I electively quit my job after working for the same physician for 10 years to further my education. I left with a high letter of recommendation. Yes, I failed one class and managed to maintain A and B's. I have never missed a day of class and was mislead by Brown Mackie that I would have to sign a withdraw letter and then right before I would start my concentration classes in November I would be eligible for re-entry after signing the re-entry paper work. I was informed earlier in the year that I would have to sit out 3 months for the reason of failing that 1 class. Since, I knew I would not be in school for the month of October I had a surgery scheduled that was done on October 6th. I'm currently 11 days post surgery that was scheduled and timed so that I would be good to go for the November start of my concentration class. I have a letter that was provided to me stating I had nothing to worry about durning the teach out because I was on schedule to complete in 2017. Right before my surgery Nicole Kyler e-mailed me stating am classes were not going to be offered only night classes and then I got good news within the same week from her stating they were going to allow am classes and then I get another e-mail stating back to square one, only evening classes are being offered. I managed to figure out my new evening schedule at the last minute and asked Nichole for a November class schedule and never received a response back. All I wanted to do was make the best of the teach out situation and get my surgical tecnology certification and move on. I choose this school because I had a relative graduate from here and mention to me that this was a good school. I feel betrayed by Brown Mackie. Bryan informing me that I'm not eligible for re-entry because of new changes is not the answer I'm looking for. Please inform me why I was denied after following your rules here at Brown Mackie. Sincerely, Maria Villegas This is the e-mail I sent the school last week and no one will respond back to me. Please advise me what I should do? I'm so upset because I was on target to finally start my concentration class for the surgical tecnology program.

Silly girl, they are cheats and you are too honest to see how they screwed you over. Think about it...

If you took somebody's money and livelihood away from them, would you actually answer their emails? That's a really bad place. They did practically the same thing to me. They don't have feelings.

They only have 'hate' because they got caught cheating a bunch of people out money and they are now obligated to repay them some of that money back.

Trust this, they had a darn good old time on students money.

Rip off!

Reading some of these lawsuits were dated before I graduated from Brown Mackie, it makes me sick. I had the best academic advisor that made everything sound so great. It worked with my work hours, I could considerate on one class at a time and I was told by the school that all my credits would transfer. 1 month before I graduated, some "fee" pops up and out of no where I owed $3000 or I wouldn't be able to do my externship or graduate. Then I went to a new school after graduation and looked like an *** with a grin on my face thinking that I would only have to take 8 classes to get my nursing degree. The Dean of the new school cried when she told me that there was no way that she could transfer my credits. I gave up on school because I was $25000 in debt and had to start over from scratch. Brown Mackie has made my life so terrible when it comes to my credit, my career and my faith in people. -K. Kincanon

I'm guessing that your inability to write correctly may be 1/2 of the problem, god only knows how your resume looks. There were way too many errors in a whopping two sentences.

I'm sure it's a *** school but, judging by your comment, your partly to blame for not being hired.

Save your time & money!

I attended Brown Mackie College in Ft. Mitchell, Kentucky from April 2011 – September 2012 for Practical Nursing. I had applied for school in March of 2011 and was required to file/apply for any Pell Grants/potential loans under my mother’s income & credit score. My mother and I were told while in the Brown Mackie financial department that I wasn’t able to obtain any type of assistance or loans based off of credit scores and income. In order to attend school at Brown Mackie, I would be required to pay around $550 per month. I was drawn into the program after discovering how quick I could be done with college and begin working in my field of choice making a nice living wage. I ultimately decided to attend Brown Mackie College beginning in April 2011 and began paying my monthly payment at that time. My final month at Brown Mackie was September of 2012 and at that time, I knew that I had around $3000 left that I owed to the school. I received a letter from Brown Mackie stating they would take a settlement amount of around $2,400 and that day, after receiving the letter, I went in-person to pay the “settlement amount” and received a receipt stating “paid in full” for my schooling. You can imagine my surprise and concern when I began receiving letters and phone calls stating that I owe money for loans that I was unaware that I have since I was informed that I wasn’t eligible for any type of loan(s) and paid such a high amount each month just to attend college. My credit score has drastically dropped down for “non-payment” of said loans. I find it very hard to believe that I owe anything from attending this school. I, myself, can’t believe that this school is actually still in business. I had issues with this school while attending. As I had previously mentioned, I was attending Brown Mackie for Practical Nursing. While in school, I was required to take ATI testing every few months. I was threated multiple times by the school & teachers that if I was unable to pass this test that I would be dropped from the program and no longer eligible to re-apply/re-enter this program. Luckily I passed the test and graduated, but, just the thought of almost having all of my hard-work, time & money just swept out from under me raised multiple red flags. What type of higher education establishment was I attending? To add to my frustration, I wasn’t aware that the credits from Brown Mackie are non-transferrable until about a month after I had graduated. I would like to have the opportunity to continue on with school and higher my education, but, I essentially will be starting over. The only “good thing” that has come out of attending Brown Mackie is that I did obtain my Practical Nursing licensure, but, I have been unsuccessful in finding employment since the nursing field is mainly employing only Registered Nurses. So really what’s so “good” about it? The fact that I can say I am an LPN? I feel that I have been scammed and robbed and believe the U.S. Department of Education should feel the same. I can only begin to imagine how much money this “college” has taken from it students and the U.S. Government. Upon further investigation of this school, I have discovered that the branch of this school that I attended is no longer in business. Another discovery of mine was that the neighboring state of Indiana had sued Brown Mackie college and its parenting company Education Management Corporation for bribing their recruiters to sign more students for programs just to obtain loan money on behalf of that student whether that student continued with school or not. This entire college is a complete rip-off to anyone who attends and apparently signs students up for loans whether they know it or not just to put in their own pocket which is what I believe has happened to me. I believe this school needs to be under further investigation by the U.S. Department of Education. It is definitely not my responsibility along with other students to pay for their fraud.

I graduated in 2010 from the COTA program from the same location, and I feel like I was not disbursed all of the monies that were due through the loans (I now owe, though not working in the field). The program was pretty shoddily run, and I was lied to about fieldwork on more than one occasion, having to repeat and pay again for a 12-week rotation.

I agree. The Fort Mitchell campus should be under investigation.

Brown Mackie College - Occupational Therapy Assistant Program Review

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I am a graduate of the Brown Mackie OTA program. I was an excellent student, making the dean's list every quarter and graduated with a 4.0GPA. I was (I know now looking back), EXTREMELY LUCKY and found a fantastic job before even passing my exam. After almost 3 years at this company, I reluctantly resigned for medical reasons. I used this time to stay at home with my toddler. When I was physically and emotionally ready to rejoin the workforce I quickly realized, THERE ARE NO JOBS! I have been looking now for over 6 months and my family is suffering financially! I found 1 PRN job, which has thus far been a complete joke! Started in August and theyve scheduled me for a total of 14 days for the remainder of 2016! Besides that, Ive been treated horribly by the hiring manager and director. Bottom line...DO NOT ENTER ANY COTA PROGRAM! The job is completely saturated! I know fellow classmates from 2011 that never found employment. Now they have thousands of dollars of debt and nothing to show for it.

There are plenty of COTA jobs out there but you may have to relocate. DO SOME research before blasting someone....

Not everyone has the LUXURY of relocating! And yes I HAVE done my research.

I was offered and accepted a job in San Francisco California, then couldn't make it out there due to costs. Relocating would be an option if companies would offer relocation funds. And btw apparently Brown Mackie isn't doing so well considering they're closing in Louisville. Bottom line...people are being lied to by for-profit institutions.

The market is incredibly saturated. Perhaps you should do more research yourself.

Useless Degree

Well over 30,000 in student debt for a useless Medical Assistant Associate degree. I tried to obtain employment for years with no success and found out later that the credits would not transfer. Brown Mackie is worthless causing mountains of student loan debt. Everyone should have their debt forgiven as they used deceitful practices and didn't disclose that their credits would not transfer. The debt I've incurred is beyond ridiculous and the fact that this place has not been closed permanently is beyond me. How many students actually began a career in their respective field after graduation. I would love to see those statistics.

Unprofessional instructor

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
The surgical Tech instructor Lisa Blue from Tucson AZ is very unprofessional, make her students do the lecture instead of doing her job, I paid around $35,000 and she just provide us with ONLY one surgical gown that we had to learn how to folded back again to re-used because she was not kind enough to show her class how to do it. The lab is nasty, every time that rains, there is always a leaking. Every time we ask her a question she responds either with I don't know or responds very rude. She gives assignments and like surgery cases without giving us an explanation, we have to to research without knowing if we are doing it right. I'm very disappointed with the school and this unprofessional instructor that I don't think she should be teaching there. This instructor is a Joke and something needs to get done with her or at least provide us with enough supplies so we can have a better education.

My BMC experience

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I actually enjoyed my time in BMC and I learned a lot! So although more prestigious institutions don't recognize the credits earned at BMC employers certainly recognize the degree, and my degree has gotten me several good jobs in my field of study. As far as transferring credits, I have not had any problems transferring credits to other colleges. It is actually up to each individual school to decide which credits transfer and which don't. So I am satisfied with my experience at BMC for several reasons. 1) Employers certainly recognize the degree so it will help you get the job you are seeking. 2) Because of the reputation, and all of the lawsuits my student loans are going to be forgiven by the government and I wont have to pay anything back yet I get to keep my degree. 3) Because of my GPA at BMC I was nominated to become part of Alpha Beta Kappa (ABK) National honor societies fraternity who will give me letters of recommendation any time I need one, and will help me in any other ways I need them which will give me an edge to getting the job I am seeking. So I have the prestige of knowing I successfully completed my degree program earning my degree, and I earned a lifetime membership in a nationally recognized fraternity so to each their own when it comes to choosing to go to this school, but for me I don't regret my decision at all, and am very happy with my experience.

Brown Mackie College - Some Issues With The Financial Aid Office Review from Louisville, Kentucky

stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full stars-rating-full
I would really like to hear more about your situation! I did graduate from one here in Kentucky and I used student loans for first month until my Veterans paper work was turned in which I hand delivered myself to my financial aid advisor. I made straight A's for over a year and a half until my fiancé died in our home and I knew something was wrong, you know that feeling in your gut thing? School wouldn't let me leave stating I was too emotional to drive. By the time I got home after going all the way to the Dean he had died.. Had they let me leave I would have been home in time. Also I could have called 911 but would have felt dumb telling the police I feel something wrong in my gut. My fault and guilt with that part. So I made a C in that class which of course was psychology and didn't miss any school during that period. My GPA dropped from a 3.9 to a 3.6, the math didn't add up, made A's and B's for my last 4 classes. I had to be admitted into the hospital, ICU for blood clots, which during the past two months we were doing EKG studies and phlebotomy, the tests showed something wrong in class but the head Nurse in charge of the course didn't like me and kept telling me nothing was wrong, I did my tests wrong.... Bull!!! So I called the VA who was paying the school and left the school messages stating I was in the ICU and would be missing my first days ever. I got a text from the head of my department telling me they were going to unrolled me from class. So if I got a text from her how is it she didn't receive any of my messages? Plus the VA called. I was not charged as far as I can tell for missing four days total. But now I am being told I owe student aid 8,700 dollars. I know that isn't the price for one month, come to find out the lady didn't take me off of the loan. I even talked to my VA rep because I was told I could still get the grants that are given out with FICA every quarter, since I started out using student loans, I took money out from my account which was thousands in the above. I only used the grant money which I was entitled to and it was only the stipends I received which I saved for the first year and a half. Now I have to figure out why was student loans still being paid to the school when they were being paid by the VA and if the money I used was the overflow? If you have any suggestions I would love to read them, because the money I took out equaled the money from the grants, and every beginning of the new year I was told to use FICA, and I would ask, why if I'm not getting student loans anymore? I was told because I started out with the loan and because I owed for that month I was entitled to those grants. Being a single mother and who just lost the father of said child and questioning the VA about said grants and was told I could get them, so I did.. Unlike most I left that money in my school account instead of it being put into my checking account. That's what I used every time I received a stipend from my school account. Plus I paid attention to that account and it only showed the two student loans that it was supposed to show, I am really upset at the financial advisor and myself because I took her word that I was no longer receiving student loans nor did they appear until after I graduated. I hope to have answers soon.... Besides those few issues I really enjoyed my classes and instructor's for the most part. I was in various school clubs, made student of the month, raised money to different causes. If I find out that ,one my degree isn't worth anything, two I owe for loans that had been cancelled and the school was being paid by the VA and last that I can't get the resources I need to get my certification so I can be a CMA I will be one upset woman. Any suggestions?

I am sorry but you will need to contact the lender of the loans you initially took out to find out. The school is closing and you more than likely may have a big financial issue on your hands. Also I would recommend you transfer to Argosy University their sister school which has a much better reputation.
